EVERYTHING WE DO IS MUSIC
A downloadable game for Windows
This project was created for Steve Lee's Blocktober level design jam from September 25:th - October 29:th (later changed to November 4:th) with the theme of 4:33.
The theme stems from John Cage's composition 4:33:
I used this performance as an inspiration for my levels. In the beginning of the performance of the YouTube video above, there is a quote saying "Everything we do is music". I therefore decided to analyse this and try to make a level representing how i view music when it is viewed in my head.
The performance of 4:33 is divided into three different movements, each with a different length. I therefore decided to divide my project into three different levels, that represent the three movements of the performance in length and mirror different aspects of understanding music (more so how i understand music and how it is perceived in my head). It is supposed to be abstract and a bit weird.
Movement 1 - How music feels when it's perfect and a song hits just right. Bliss.
Movement 2 - How music (more specifically an album) can sound when you don't get it. It almost feels like a puzzle to figure out what the artist/musician means with their creation and you have to figure out the puzzle.
Movement 3 - How music can feel when you don't understand it. It can be either good or bad, or both, but it almost feels like a confusing maze.

I worked on this project for a couple of hours every week during the event and really enjoyed the process. It helped me improve my puzzle design skills in how i had to figure out how to make new, more complex puzzles while still keeping them simple for the player to understand what is happening during gameplay. It also taught me how to reflect more about theme from a level design standpoint and set an abstract atmosphere only using a blockout. I also worked a lot on framing objects and objectives.
This has been an enjoyable event and i hope you have fun playing this small game!
